Obituary: Barry Standish

Remembering Barry Standish

21 March 2024

Long-term Economics Lecturer, and GSB Legend, Barry Standish passed away on 21 March 2024 after an 18-month long battle with cancer. Barry was a talented teacher well-known for his dry sense of humour. Messages have been pouring in; "I remember Barry saying that Economics was like trying to drive somewhere with nothing but your rear-view mirror to navigate the road ahead and if you squint your left eye to see more clearly, you get one answer and if you squint your right eye to see more clearly you get another answer… Still makes me laugh to this day."

"Guns and butter - he was a gem."

"I think about Barry’s lectures all the time. So many interesting stories. Very sad news."

"Very sad. He was an educator who stood out through his passion and personality. RIP Barry Standish."

"RIP Barry. His classes were amongst my favourites and he was a genuinely warm and funny Guy. I wish his family my heartfelt condolences for their loss."

We are so grateful that he was able to join us at the Alumni Reunion Weekend in October 2023. Despite being unwell, he delivered a cracking two-hour lecture on the macroeconomic global situation - to a standing ovation. The recording will be made available in due course. We share our sincere condolences to his family.
