ARW 2023: Insight and inspiration
The 2023 UCT GSB Alumni Reunion Weekend (ARW) was another resounding success. The anticipation was palpable in the weeks leading up to the event. Alumni from across the globe made the effort to return to the campus, reconnect with old friends, and gain fresh perspectives on leadership and the business world.
The event kicked off in style with an inspiring case study and lecture led by none other than GSB Director, Dr Catherine Duggan, on the topic of "Doing Business in Africa." As always, Dr Duggan enthralled her audience with a tale of insight into the historic Goldenberg Scandal – setting the tone for a weekend of learning and exploration.
The evening concluded with a lively rooftop reception at the GSB Conference Centre, where attendees sipped cocktails, indulged in a light dinner, and networked under the stars.
Alumni returned for a day packed with speakers that are pioneering in their fields, and and are truly broadening our horizons. Professor Linda Ronnie’s powerful session on "Courageous Leadership" emphasized the need for leaders to cultivate bravery and conviction, especially when navigating personal values and organizational challenges.
Jan Fourie (MBA 2012/13) shared his invaluable insights on the growth of solar energy and the opportunities for renewable energy in Africa, and Farayi Kambarami explored the intersection of AI and African Intelligence, providing thought-provoking perspectives on how technology is reshaping the continent’s future. These sessions weren’t just educational—they were calls to action, urging attendees to think critically about their role in these evolving sectors.
The weekend’s food for thought culminated with one of the most accomplished intellectual chefs of the GSB community. Professor Barry Standish took the alumni on a thrilling journey through the complexities of global banking systems with his talk on macroeconomic policy conflicts, framed as a "murder mystery" and how central banks faced off against inflation. (Spoiler: it was the loose controls in the system with the printing press!) His compelling narrative captivated the audience, leaving them to ponder the high-stakes decisions that define modern economies.
Little did the attendees know that this would be the last time that they – or anyone – would have the pleasure of listening to and learning from this legendary former GSB lecturer. Barry sadly passed away months after delivering his keynote address.
Celebrating success: Alumni Awards and Springbok semifinals
The Saturday evening celebrations kicking off with a chocolate-tasting experience courtesy of Honest Chocolate, paired with welcome drinks. But the evening's highlight was undoubtedly the Alumni Awards ceremony. Each year, these awards shine a spotlight on the individuals who have gone above and beyond, and are a time to experience the warm glow of pride for ourselves and each other.
The 2023 recipients were no exception:
- Bruce Isdale (MBA 2014) was honoured for his significant contributions to promoting and serving the UCT GSB.
- Mukona Khalushi (PGDip in Management Practice 2016/2017) was recognised for building strong alumni relationships within the GSB community.
- Stewart Cohen (MBA 1969) received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, a distinction reserved for those who have dedicated their lives to making a significant impact on society.
The ceremony ended on a high note as alumni gathered to cheer on their teams with a live screening of the Rugby World Cup semi-final, boosted by the lifelong camaraderie and indefatigable spirit that defines the GSB community.
A Tradition of Toughness: The Three Peaks Challenge
Sunday’s Three Peaks Challenge invoked the spirit of bravery and adventure from the alumni as they gathered at dawn to take on the iconic trio of Cape Town’s peaks—Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head. A testament to the grit and determination that GSB graduates embody.
Then it was time to call it a day among those we love the most with the traditional Family Brunch at The Brig, where alumni could put their feet up, celebrate lifelong bonds, and reflect on the weekend’s gifts that will keep on giving. Until the next time.
