LEAD STRATEGICALLY WITH INTENTION IN COMPLEXITY

Catherine Duggan
Catherine Duggan

“The African Century is coming, but how can we prepare to lead in this new future? Africa, with the youngest population in the world, stands at the cusp of leading in new ideas, new innovations, and new markets. Yet in the face of uncertainty, complexity, and change, business leaders on the continent must be more flexible than ever before, better at identifying new risks and new opportunities, more aware of our responsibilities and capacity for impact, and more able to inspire others to be their best. As Africa and African companies move to the forefront of global markets and conversations, we have an opportunity to build an exciting and inclusive future for generations to come — but we must begin now.”

Dr Duggan's academic work is on the political economy of development in Africa, with a particular focus on institutional development and financial sector regulation. She has worked on the continent for more than twenty years and gained experience in nearly two dozen African countries. She is the author of a number of case studies on African firms and countries, including cases on South Africa, Nigeria, DRC, Zimbabwe, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and others. She regularly leads strategy and leadership workshops for corporations and has advised a number of governments and public sector agencies on the continent and beyond. She earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University, where she was the G.J. Lieberman Fellow for the Social Sciences, and received a B.A. with honors in Political Science from Brown University.

Dr Duggan was previously a professor at Harvard Business School (HBS) in the Business, Government, and the International Economy (BGIE) Unit, where she taught leadership and political economy in MBA and executive education programs for nearly a decade. At HBS she was the first woman in the school’s history to win the Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Required Curriculum two years in a row. She also received the Charles M. Williams Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named the Berol Corporation Fellow.
Camille Meyer
Camille Meyer

"A Black Swan is rare, different and breaks the norm - something that all innovators and leaders want and need to do/be. A true innovator and leader anticipates change, challenges the status quo and disrupts the normal sequence of events.  Change the business world to lead strategically with intention in complexity !  As individuals and organizations embrace first principle thinking, to unleash creative possibilities and solve for complex business problems, a vibrant new vision for business emerges that goes beyond merely adapting. We invite practitioners and scholars to take their place at the UCT GSB Executive Leadership Convention to co-create ways to strive for more sustainable and impactful practices of strategy and leadership.    Our theme and focus present an opportunity to understand the conditions that continue to evolve strategy, inspire leadership practice and pursue excellence."
