Speakers

Ms Joy-Marie Lawrence

Programme Convenor
Joy-Marie Lawrence is a Chartered Director and the Founder of Boardvisory. She has extensive experience as a lawyer, businesswoman and is also a leadership coach. Joy-Marie has been a fellow of the Institute of Directors of South Africa since 2009 and has been a credentialed Chartered Director since 2017. Her qualifications include an Executive MBA (with distinction) from the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB), a Master of Law (LLM) degree in Outer Space, Broadcasting and Telecommunications (University of the Witwatersrand), an accreditation as a Professional Certified Coach by the International Coaching Federation, a Bachelor of Law (LLB) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, both from UCT. Joy-Marie is also an accredited, integrative Enneagram and Emotional Intelligence practitioner. With more than 24 years’ corporate experience, she completed her legal articles at Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg. Her corporate work experience includes the Telecommunications sector, Media & Broadcasting and the IT sector. Joy-Marie currently serves as a board coach, mentor and facilitator.

Jacob Makgato

Business Development Manager

As the primary client engagement partner, Jacob engages with multiple organizations to gain insight into their employee learning and development challenges. He leads diagnostic conversations and collaborates with stakeholders to design appropriate solutions that unlock their leadership and management potential. Jacob has extensive experience designing customised programmes for employees at different levels within the organisation and across various sectors. 

As the founding manager of the UCT GSB Satellite Campus in Sandton, Johannesburg, his responsibilities include maintaining the highest standards within the branch and ensuring adherence to company policies. He is also responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the branch and maintaining regular contact with customers and employees to ensure that quality service is consistently provided.

He is a passionate and driven lifelong learner, committed to enabling partnerships between business and educational institutions. With his extensive experience in higher education, Jacob has honed his skills in both business and people development. He has previously worked for Wits Business School as the Business Development Manager and Branch Manager for International Business Training College (IBTC), where managed the Illovo branch which offered CIMA, CFA, ICB and ACCA customised Learnership programmes for accounting and finance candidates. 

Jacob holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from African Leadership University (ALU), a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Development (PDM) from Wits University, and a BA (Psychology) from the University of Johannesburg.
