Meet Our Distinguished Panel
This event will be moderated Joy-Marie Lawrence - an esteemed boardroom leader, accredited coach and Chartered Director with a wealth of experience in executive mentorship.

As founder of Tactus Advisory, his insights and award-winning teaching offer valuable perspectives on Africa’s infrastructure finance landscape.

Speakers
Joy-Marie Lawrence
Joy-Marie Lawrence is a Chartered Director, and the Founder of Boardvisory, with extensive experience as a lawyer and business woman, her purpose as a Board Coach is to cultivate courageous conversations that enable effective boardroom decision-making.
Joy-Marie also designs and delivers boardroom courses relevant to Board Director Development.
Her qualifications include an Executive MBA (cum laude) (UCT Graduate School of Business), a Masters of Law (LLM) in Outer Space, Broadcasting, Telecommunications (WITS), a Professional Certified Coach accredited by International Coaching Federation, an Advanced Programme for Private Equity (GIBS), Diploma in Integral Practitioner Coaching,
a Bachelors of Law (LLB) (UCT) and BA (UCT). Joy-Marie is also an accredited integrative Enneagram practitioner and Five Lens Practitioner Joy-Marie has been a fellow of the Institute of Directors of South Africa since 2009 and is an accredited Chartered Director since 2017.
With more than 24 years’ experience, she completed her legal articles at Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg. Her corporate work experience includes the Telecommunications sector, Media & Broadcasting and the IT sector. Joy-Marie also currently serves as a mentor, facilitator and keynote speaker.
Joy-Marie’s experience as a Non-Executive Director and Chairperson of boards spans the investment, science and technology, legal, education and health sectors. Her current directorships include:
• non-executive director of WDB Investment Holdings;
• non-executive director of Old Mutual (South Africa) Nominees (RF) (Pty) Ltd;
• non-executive director of TEKANO;
• Non-Executive Director of Assore South Africa (Pty) Ltd
Joy-Marie has also previously served on the UCT GSB Advisory Board and as a nonexecutive director of Diageo South Africa (Pty) Ltd. She was previously a founding Board
member and subsequently the Chair of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA)
a (section 3A) statutory entity reporting to the South African Department of Science and
Technology.
Adv Siham Boda
Advocate, Director, Independent practitioner
Siham is a Conflict Dynamics trainer and mediator coach and assessor. She provided training to clients in the corporate and education sectors over many years. Siham is a member of the Association of Independent Mediators (AIM), which raises awareness of mediation as a dispute resolution mechanism to the public. In her spare time, Siham volunteers her mediation services to the Wynberg Magistrates Court as well as Rotary District 9350's clubs and projects.

David Makovah
Dr David Makovah is the CEO and founder of Mr-Mak Learning - this digital first education business conducts professional training interventions in business in Africa broadly and including leadership, management, capital markets, credit, finance, economics, and related areas. The portfolio of clients includes leading South African Business Schools (Graduate School of Business (UCT), Gordon Institute of Business Science (UP) and Wits Business School) and corporates (Liberty, Investec, Standard Bank, Eskom, ECIC, Transnet). David holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Rhodes University) and Honours in Accounting Science (UNISA). He is a registered Chartered Accountant and holds a PhD in Project and Infrastructure Finance. He has extensive experience in both the private and public sectors. This covers companies ranging from small and medium size enterprises to listed blue chip corporates. He began his career by serving articles at KPMG in Parktown Johannesburg. Subsequent to this he joined Nedbank’s Group Risk division focusing on the commercial and corporate sections of the bank including structured finance and public financing.
David was seconded for 6 months to Old Mutual Asset Management in London to assist with the launch of their first two hedge funds. This deepened his expertise in financial services and banking.
In 2004 David returned to public practice as a manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in their Banking and Capital Markets division. He was responsible for auditing and consulting with private and public treasuries, and Corporate Finance divisions. His clients included Eskom Treasury, the South African Reserve Bank, Rand Merchant Bank Corporate Finance, and the Bond Exchange of South Africa. David was also responsible for drawing up and implementing audit methodologies and rolling out firm wide training to ensure compliance with BEE and specifically the Financial Sector Charter. As from 2006, David has pursued the entrepreneurial route culminating in the founding of Tactus Advisory of which he is a founder and director.
He has won multiple awards including Executive Education Lecturer of the year 2012/2014/2015 at the Wits Business School, MBA Lecturer of the Year (Part Time) 2015 at GIBS. David is highly regarded in the banking and financial services sector in South Africa and beyond, having conducted engagements in countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Dubai, United Kingdom, Tunisia, Egypt, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and India.
David holds a PhD in Project and Infrastructure Finance that focused on holistic measures for the more effective execution of infrastructure and project finance initiatives in sub- Saharan Africa.
He founded ‘Mr. Mak Learning’, an internet-based learning platform that delivers digitised training and educational content focused on business learning contextualised in African markets.
He is a passionate proponent of Africa’s potential through people, an avid reader and traveller, and a novice and very limited golfer.
Lukhanyo Vangqa
Director of Media Liaison and Spokesperson for the Minister of Basic Education.
He returned to the private sector after the 2019 elections taking up various positions with Cochrane Steel and Chiron Group (an entrepreneurial venture), before returning to the public service with the election of the Government of National Unity in 2024.
His current role is Director of Media Liaison and Spokesperson for the Minister of Basic Education.
Lukhanyo was involved in the Fees Must Fall negotiations at both National and Institutional levels in 2016 and was a signatory to the His People Agreement that broke the 3 months student strike at CPUT in 2016 and was elected into the Rapid Response Task Team that acted as a clearing house for FMF related conflicts.
He has advised 3 political parties on Communications and Strategy and has given political analysis to SAFM, SABC TV News, ENCA, Bloomberg, and China TV amongst others.
